Smooth Criminal

“What do you mean, bucket?” Brecca was annoyed. She thought that maybe she’d misheard, but that seemed impossible to do given that she wasn’t really hearing anyway, and the impression of a bucket in her mind had been so strong. But there was no answer.

Brecca took off at a good pace, heading for the building. As she approached, her con synched up with the local network. There was a ping – a message. She pulled it out to see what it was. Nex had written again. He’d received her message. He and Cam were still being held, but they had some food now, and the captivity had settled into boredom. That was probably good – anything exciting in this context would probably be dangerous. She sent a quick message back, no details. None of the details would be believable anyway. At least they were alive and safe, for now. She suddenly thought of Jerrin and the others in the cave. They might be worried about her after her sudden departure. She found Jerrin’s contact info on the network and sent her a quick update, leaving out the really weird parts. Which, it turned out, was a lot of it. She didn’t know if they were still hooked to the network there in the cave, but she hoped they’d get it.

Brecca reached the building and stopped a few meters away from the main doors at the front. She decided to start at the far door, nearer the yellow blob that had seemed to be sitting up. It seemed like maybe that was Corax. Unless Corax was sleeping in the back, and her father was there tied to a chair. Honestly, either way, it would be something to work with. That door was sealed, and she couldn’t see a way to open it from the outside.

The building had only a couple of small windows. She took a moment to creep around the perimeter and risked a quick glance in the windows, but she couldn’t see anything interesting, just supplies on shelves and a small room with a desk. There seemed to be no way in but the two big doors in the front. The building was not much more than a warehouse with two bays.

She came back around to the front of the building. She took a look back towards the Vonar ship. From this distance, with the door closed, she couldn’t see the ship at all. The cloaking really was impressive. She turned back to the building. Nothing for it but to make herself known, she thought. She took the pistol from her holster and then banged on the door with her other hand.

“Hey. Corax. You in there?”

A voice, muffled, came from inside. “What do you want?”

“You have something I want. Or rather, somebody.”

“What are you, ten?”

“Sixteen. That’s not important. I’ve got backup, and weapons trained on your building, but I don’t mean you any harm.” Technically sort of true. So far. “Let’s talk.”

“Any of those things out there?”

“The invaders? No.
